Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan says he is close to signing a new two-year contract with the League Two club.

Shrewsbury Town manager Gavin Cowan is on the verge of securing his future with the club, revealing that a new two-year contract is nearly finalized. The League Two side has seen a remarkable turnaround under Cowan's leadership since he took the helm in late January.

When Cowan arrived, Shrewsbury were languishing in 21st place, just two points above the relegation zone. The former Shrewsbury midfielder, who once patrolled the pitch for the club, quickly turned things around. He won six of his first nine matches in charge, lifting the team to safety with three games to spare—a feat that has fans buzzing with optimism.

"I'm chomping at the bit to sign that new deal and get the fans and the club together," Cowan told BBC Radio Shropshire. "We want to build on what was a really good last 15 weeks of the season. I haven't signed yet because I want to make sure we get everything right off the field, especially in terms of staff."

The gaffer's confidence extends beyond his own contract. He's "optimistic" about retaining key players Luca Hoole, Josh Ruffels, and Taylor Perry, who are all in talks for new deals. "The offers we've put forward are the best we can do, and they should be flattered by that," Cowan said. "Now it comes down to whether they want to be part of this club's future."

Despite describing the club's budget as "not favourable," Cowan is already thinking ahead to next season. Shrewsbury are "ahead of the game" in recruitment, he insists. "We want players and characters who are committed to the club. Once you have the right people, you can achieve extraordinary things. We're in every room—we might not get every player, but we're always putting our best foot forward."

For Shrewsbury fans, this is a promising sign of stability after a season of highs and lows. With Cowan at the helm and a core squad potentially locked in, the club is poised to build on their 19th-place finish and aim higher in League Two. Whether you're cheering from the stands or gearing up in your Shrewsbury gear, this is a team worth watching.
