Former Sunderland captain Gary Bennett believes the Black Cats should be "happy with a point" after their hard-fought 1-1 draw at Wolves, but he admits there's a growing concern over set-piece defending that manager Regis le Bris will need to address.
Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Bennett acknowledged the positives: "I think overall they've got to be happy with that point, especially when you're down to 10 men coming to Wolves." It's a resilient performance that showcases the team's fighting spirit, something fans can be proud of as they look to build momentum this season.
However, the former captain didn't shy away from highlighting a troubling trend. "They'll be disappointed about the goal they conceded from a set-piece. I think that has been a concern," Bennett said. "Early on in the season we defended very well from set-pieces, recently we have been conceding goals—last Friday night against Nottingham Forest and again against Wolves. Regis le Bris will be disappointed about conceding from a set-piece."
This defensive vulnerability is a wake-up call for Sunderland, who started the campaign with such promise from dead-ball situations. For le Bris and his squad, tightening up at the back will be key to turning draws into wins. As the season heats up, every point matters, but so does the ability to hold firm under pressure—especially when down to 10 men.
