Shohei the Slugger or Shohei the Ace? Dodgers Nation Makes Its Choice

Is Shohei Ohtani more valuable as a hitter or a pitcher? We polled Dodgers Nation to see if fans prefer the 50/50 slugger or the ace with a 0.60 ERA.

When you have a player like Shohei Ohtani, you're not just getting a superstar—you're getting two. The question is, which version do Dodgers fans value more?

Let's break it down. As a hitter, Ohtani is nothing short of historic. He's the first player ever to notch 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season, and he's followed that up with back-to-back 50-homer campaigns. On the mound, he's been equally dominant, posting a jaw-dropping 0.60 ERA that could lead the National League after tonight's start.

The beauty for the Dodgers? They get both elite talents while using just one roster spot—a luxury that has the rest of baseball shaking their heads. But manager Dave Roberts recently hinted that Ohtani will likely sit out of the batting order on days he pitches, which got us thinking: Which Ohtani is more valuable to this team?

We put it to a vote on Dodgers Nation, and the results are in. Four hours into polling, "Ohtani the hitter" was running away with it, commanding about 63% of the vote to 37% for "Ohtani the pitcher."

Fans had plenty to say. "We have enough starters, we don't have good bats of late," wrote @tphyompark, echoing a common theme. And it's a fair point. While Dodgers Nation's Doug McKain recently ranked Ohtani as the team's best pitcher so far in 2026, the rotation is deep—Tyler Glasnow, Justin Wrobleski, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are all strong arms, with Blake Snell on the comeback trail.

Commenter @XLoneLeeX kept an open mind: "Can't really answer that because it all depends on how the rest of the team is doing. Offense hasn't been there consistently, including his. Team pitching has been great, but that could change as the year progresses. I picked hitting, but that may change later on if team pitching dips."

@dahatch14 added, "Hitter, but the big if is that Wrobleski has to be the stud he's been and the rest of the rotation stays healthy." And @fakethug7 kept it simple: "Considering his production the last two years as a hitter, it's a no-brainer."

Not everyone agrees, though. Some fans pointed out that Ohtani the hitter is actually underperforming relative to his own lofty standards this season, while Ohtani the pitcher remains untouchable. "Right now? He's more valuable as a pitcher," argued @CBelli_Lover35. "When you look at the lineup they have, the offense has the ability to score top to bottom..."

Whether you're team Slugger or team Ace, one thing is clear: Having the choice is a problem most teams would love to have. For now, Dodgers fans are leaning toward the bat—but with a season this long, that could change by the next pitch.
