New Bengals defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence wanted No. 97 from Shemar Stewart.

When a veteran like Dexter Lawrence walks into a new locker room, there's an unspoken code of respect—especially when it comes to jersey numbers. The newly acquired Bengals defensive tackle had his eyes set on No. 97, a number that belonged to teammate Shemar Stewart. And after a quick, classy negotiation, the digits are now Lawrence's.

Stewart opened up to reporters this week about the exchange, revealing that he handed over the number for what he called a "reasonable" fee. "Man, he earned that, so it's his number," Stewart said, via Noelle Blumel of WCPO. "I had no right to keep that number."

The conversation between the two defensive linemen was refreshingly straightforward. "Dex was like, 'What you want for the number?'" Stewart recalled. "Told him a reasonable number. And he's like, 'OK.' Here, I told him, 'I'm not gonna be the one to stop you from getting your number. I'm not that type of guy. You're probably like a walking legend.'"

It's the kind of veteran respect that makes the NFL feel like a brotherhood—especially on the defensive line, where chemistry and trust are everything. Stewart, now sporting No. 94, takes over a number previously worn by Sam Hubbard from 2018 through 2024. Defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson, who had 94 last season, has shifted to No. 68 to accommodate the change.

For fans and gear collectors alike, jersey number swaps like this are more than just trivia—they're a snapshot of locker room culture. And for Lawrence, wearing 97 with the Bengals is a statement: some numbers are earned, not just assigned.
