Shane van Gisbergen is back in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series—and this time, he's bringing a fresh wave of momentum. The three-time Supercars champion has been tapped by Spire Motorsports to drive the No. 71 Chevrolet Silverado at Charlotte Motor Speedway next week, with NationsGuard on board as the primary sponsor.
This will mark SVG's third career Truck Series start and his second on an oval. His first oval outing came in 2023 at IRP with Niece Motorsports, where he finished 19th. But van Gisbergen showed serious promise just last weekend at Watkins Glen, steering the No. 71 truck to a third-place finish. Two days later, he turned heads by winning the Cup Series race at the same track, edging out Spire's own Michael McDowell in a thrilling final stint.
Van Gisbergen is the second Trackhouse Racing driver to climb behind the wheel of a Spire truck this season. Teammate Connor Zilisch piloted the same No. 71 entry to a runner-up finish at The Glen, setting the stage for SVG to build on that momentum.
At Charlotte, van Gisbergen will share the track with fellow Cup Series regulars Kyle Busch and Carson Hocevar. While all three drive Chevrolets, only Hocevar also races for Spire in the Cup Series. The trio promises to deliver some high-octane action under the lights.
Charlotte will also be a milestone for van Gisbergen: it's the first oval where he'll have competed in all three national NASCAR levels. He finished a solid 14th in last year's Coca-Cola 600 and 15th in the 2024 O'Reilly race at the track, showing steady improvement on the intermediate ovals.
Spire Motorsports has been on a roll in the Truck Series, collecting 11 wins overall and two already in 2025—Busch at Atlanta and Hocevar at Texas. Both victories were 1-2 finishes for the organization, a testament to the team's growing strength. Can van Gisbergen add a third? All eyes will be on Charlotte.
