Offseason programs are underway for the Indianapolis Colts, and the plan as of now for quarterback Daniel Jones is to be ready to go for training camp in July.
Jones continues to work his way through an Achilles injury he sustained in Week 14 of last season.
"I know he's doing a hell of a job with this rehab," Shane Steichen said of Jones. "He's been tirelessly working at it. He's been in here every day, whenever 8 to 3:00. I know he's trying to hit certain landmarks, and he's on good path with that. He's dropping back, he's throwing. So he's in a good spot. So we'll see how OTAS go, but anticipate him being ready for training camp."
One of the next steps for Jones in his rehab, Steichen added, is for him to continue strengthening his Achilles.
Jones' pace in the recovery process is a credit to how diligently he's attacked the rehab process.
Steichen also had the chance to speak with Boston Celtics' President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens about Jayson Tatum's recovery from an Achilles injury he suffered. Jones and Tatum had the procedure done by the same surgeon, and like Jones, Tatum attacked the rehab process, already making his way back onto the court.
"I think it's four and a half months post-op," Steichen said of Jones, "but like I said, his rehab process has been phenomenal. He went to the same doctor that (Jayson) Tatum went to. Tatum's rolling right now for the Celtics, nine months and I think just hearing -- I had a chance to talk to Brad Stevens and his rehab process that Tatum went through, he was in that building all day, every day and Daniel's the same way. And so those guys know how to go about their business in the rehab process. And I think Daniel's doing it the right way."
Although Jones' recovery is going smoothly, the Colts will have to continue to be smart with him, to ensure that there aren't any setbacks.
"We got to be smart," Steichen added. "We got to be smart with him for sure. Obviously, we're not playing any games right now, so I know he's ripping and roaring and ready to go and all those things, but we got to be smart with him."
