The Los Angeles Lakers' playoff preparations have hit a significant snag, as they are set to begin their first-round series against the Houston Rockets this Saturday without two of their key stars. Both Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves remain sidelined with injuries sustained during an April 2nd loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, dealing a major blow to the team's championship aspirations.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, the outlook for Austin Reaves is particularly concerning for the opening round. Appearing on "The Pat McAfee Show," Charania stated, "Austin Reaves, he’s out for a majority of this first-round series. Most likely, probably the earliest for him is gonna be that first week of May." This timeline suggests Reaves, who suffered an oblique strain, may not be available until a potential second-round series.
Doncic, who traveled to Spain for treatment on his hamstring, is also expected to miss the start of the playoffs. His absence strips the Lakers of their primary playmaker and one of the league's most potent offensive engines, who averaged 8.3 assists per game this season. Combined with Reaves' secondary playmaking and scoring (5.5 assists per game), the Lakers are missing a massive chunk of their offensive creation and firepower.
In response, the burden falls heavily on LeBron James to revert to his role as the undisputed primary scorer and facilitator. However, overcoming a talented Rockets squad led by Kevin Durant will require a monumental, collective effort from the entire Lakers roster. The team's depth and resilience are about to be tested immediately in what has become a much steeper uphill battle.
