There's something special about a rivalry that's just a 30-minute drive apart, and for the past 15 months, the showdowns between UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout have been some of the most exciting matchups in the WIAC. These two neighboring schools, separated by a short stretch of I-94, consistently deliver drama across multiple sports—and Wednesday's softball doubleheader was no exception.

The Blugolds and Blue Devils gave fans a show that lasted over five hours in chilly 40-degree conditions. In Game 1, UW-Eau Claire held off a determined Stout squad for a 9-6 victory. But the real fireworks came in the nightcap at Bollinger Field, where the Blugolds staged a jaw-dropping comeback. Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, they exploded for 10 runs—only to see Stout answer with six in the sixth to make it 10-9. It took every ounce of grit for UW-Eau Claire to hold on and complete the sweep.

The celebration was electric as the final out was recorded late Wednesday night. For these student-athletes, it was a grueling day—especially considering many had early morning classes. Blugolds coach Leslie Huntington noted that her team arrived at the ballpark at 2 p.m. and didn't leave until after 9:30. One player, Molly Marquardt, even took two tests that morning before stepping onto the field.

This kind of intensity is what makes the UWEC-Stout rivalry so compelling. With the Blugolds now sitting at 28-10 under Huntington's veteran leadership—and Stout showing real promise under second-year coach Lakyn Krizan—the future of this matchup looks bright. From football and basketball to lacrosse and softball, these I-94 rivals never fail to deliver.

And the drama isn't limited to the diamond. Keep an eye on the next women's basketball meeting, especially after Hannah Iverson left Stout (where she led them to a Final Four in 2025) to take over the program at UW-Eau Claire. There's no shortage of storylines here.

Whether you're a Blugolds fan, a Blue Devils supporter, or just someone who loves great college sports, mark your calendar for the next chapter of this rivalry. It's always worth the drive.
