The Derby della Capitale is back on—but will Lazio's fiery manager Maurizio Sarri actually show up?
After days of chaos, the Roma vs. Lazio Serie A clash has finally been rescheduled for Sunday at midday local time. But Sarri, still fuming from a Coppa Italia Final loss to Inter, has threatened to boycott the match entirely. "If they want to play the derby at midday on a Sunday, I'm not coming. They can do it themselves," he told Sport Mediaset on Wednesday night.
The drama began Monday when Lega Serie A announced that five games involving Champions League hopefuls would all kick off simultaneously. The original plan was Sunday at 11:30 UK time (12:30 CEST). But local authorities quickly stepped in, ordering the match moved to Monday at 19:45 UK (20:45 CEST) over public safety concerns—it was too close to the Italian Open men's singles tennis final in the same city.
What followed was four days of back-and-forth: emergency appeals, tense summits, and plenty of frustration. Finally, this evening, all parties agreed on a compromise: Sunday at 11:00 UK (12:00 CEST).
Now the spotlight turns to Sarri. The Lazio boss, known for his tactical brilliance and no-nonsense attitude, didn't hold back after Wednesday's cup defeat. "This is a series of errors made by the Lega Serie A," he fumed. "They organised the Turin Derby around the ATP tennis finals in Turin, then the Rome Derby when the Italian Open is on in Rome. These were their mistakes, and I agree with the local authorities. I hope we play on Monday."
Sarri even went as far as suggesting he'd skip the match entirely: "If I was President of Lazio, I wouldn't even show up with the squad on Sunday. It makes no difference."
With tensions running high and a fierce rivalry at stake, all eyes are on the Stadio Olimpico this Sunday. Will Sarri follow through on his threat, or will he take the pitch and lead his team in one of Serie A's most heated derbies? One thing's for sure: this weekend's action promises plenty of drama—both on and off the field.
