Another weekend of Serie A action, another goalless draw—and for the third time in a row, Italian football fans were left searching for excitement. Bologna and Cagliari played out a forgettable 0-0 stalemate at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium on Sunday afternoon, a result that did little to lift the spirits of either side.

Coming into the match, Bologna sat ninth in the table, while a nervy Cagliari side occupied 16th place, desperate for a win to secure mathematical safety with just three games remaining. The stakes were clear, but the performance never matched the occasion.

Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna were without several key players, including goalkeeper Lukasz Skorpuski, Joao Mario, Nicolo Cambiaghi, and Thijs Dallinga. Cagliari, meanwhile, traveled without Riyad Idrissi, Luca Mazzitelli, Mattia Felici, Leonardo Pavoletti, and Gennaro Borrelli—absences that clearly hampered their attacking threat.

The first real moment of quality came after 25 minutes, when Federico Bernardeschi cut in from the right flank and curled a left-footed shot toward the far corner from the edge of the box. It was the game’s first shot on target, but Elia Caprile was well positioned to collect it comfortably.

Just before halftime, teenage goalkeeper Massimo Pessina was called into action, showing quick reflexes to deny Sebastiano Esposito at his near post. Moments later, Bologna’s Benja Dominguez appealed for a penalty after feeling a hand on his back from Yerry Mina, but the referee waved play on without a second thought.

Ten minutes after the restart, Caprile was forced to get down low and strong-arm away a dipping effort from Nikola Moro on the edge of the area. Substitute Santiago Castro then tested the Cagliari keeper from a tight angle in the 66th minute, but Caprile was again well positioned, using his full body to block the shot.

Cagliari’s best chance arrived with 10 minutes left on the clock. Ze Pedro found himself with a golden opportunity after Michael Folorunsho whipped a dangerous cross into a crowded Bologna box. But the defender couldn’t keep his effort on target, and the chance slipped away—much like the entertainment in this match.

For fans of Serie A, this was another reminder that not every match can be a thriller. For Bologna and Cagliari, it was a point earned but an opportunity lost.
