Texas State softball will wait anxiously Sunday to see if it makes the NCAA tournament, and where it might travel.

Selection Sunday is here, and for Texas State softball, the wait is on. After a tough 3-2 loss to South Alabama in the Sun Belt tournament finals on Saturday, the Bobcats missed out on an automatic NCAA tournament bid. Now, all eyes are on the selection show as they hope to hear their name called for a regional.

It wasn't the smoothest regular season for Texas State (38-20, 16-8 in conference), which finished third in the Sun Belt. But head coach Ricci Woodard had a plan—she loaded the non-conference schedule with powerhouse opponents. That strategy paid off big time. Wins over Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Clemson have given the Bobcats a resume that's hard to ignore. Those victories, combined with a second-place finish in the conference tournament, should be enough to secure an at-large bid.

Texas State currently sits at 31st in the RPI rankings, a metric that factors in winning percentage, opponent strength, and even opponents' opponents. With 33 at-large spots up for grabs, the Bobcats are in a strong position to make the cut.

So, where might they land? History offers some clues. In 2023, Texas State traveled to the Austin regional as a third seed, hosted by No. 13 Texas, only to be eliminated by Texas A&M. The 2021 team also made the Austin regional, hosted by No. 12 Texas. Last season, the Bobcats were the second seed in the College Station regional, where they beat Penn State but fell to Texas A&M twice, just short of super regionals.

The Bobcats have left Texas for regionals twice before (2016 and 2018), but this year, the Lone Star State seems more likely. With Texas A&M outside the top 16 in RPI and Texas sitting at fourth, a return to familiar territory feels within reach. The selection show airs at 6 p.m. CT, and for Texas State fans, it's time to watch and wait.
