In a season that was mostly one to forget for the Mavericks, Cooper Flagg's emergence as one of the NBA's best players provided hope for the organization's future. Will he be rewarded for his incredible debut season?

The NBA announced the dates for its next wave of awards reveals on Saturday, with the Rookie of the Year set to be awarded on Monday, April 27. Flagg would become just the third player in Mavericks history to win the award, joining a list that includes his coach, Jason Kidd, and his predecessor as franchise cornerstone, Luka Doncic.

Flagg made all of kinds of history in his rookie year, solidifying his case for the honor of top newcomer. He was only one of four rookies in NBA history to average at least 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal, and he was the first rookie since Michael Jordan in 1984-85 to lead his team in total points, rebounds, assists and steals.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft is joined on the Rookie of the Year ballot by former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets and former Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe of the Philadelphia 76ers. Knueppel is expected to be Flagg’s primary challenger after leading the NBA in 3-pointers made with 273. When the Mavericks and Hornets faced off at American Airlines Center on Jan. 29, Flagg scored 49 points and Knueppel posted a career-high 34 points.
