Manchester United's tactical evolution has taken an intriguing turn. After scrapping the 3-4-2-1 system with three centre-backs following Ruben Amorim's departure, the club initially shifted focus from central defenders to full-backs. Manager Michael Carrick's reintroduction of the 4-2-3-1 formation at Old Trafford seemed to signal a new direction.
But as any seasoned football fan knows, plans rarely survive first contact with the pitch. INEOS may now need to address both areas, with United's recruitment team considering another defensive addition.
According to journalist Paddy Keogh, a centre-back move wasn't on the table until April. The Red Devils felt comfortable with their defensive quartet of Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez, and Matthijs de Ligt. However, injury concerns have forced a rethink. Martinez has managed just 10 starts this season, while De Ligt hasn't featured since November and is unlikely to play again this campaign.
United have already extended Harry Maguire's contract after nearly letting him leave, and now they're looking to bolster their options without breaking the bank. Enter Abubacarr Sedi Kinteh—a name that's generating serious buzz in scouting circles.
The 19-year-old Tromsø prodigy is valued at just £4.3 million, making him an attractive "cheap high-upside" option. But United aren't alone in their pursuit. Chelsea, AC Milan, and RB Leipzig are also tracking the Gambian teenager, who has impressed with consistent performances in Norway's Eliteserien.
Standing at 6'1", Sedi Kinteh is something of a unicorn—a defender with a massive frame and blistering pace. He's clocked a top speed of over 37 km/h this season, making him faster than United's current speedster Bryan Mbuemo (36.4 km/h). Remarkably, that puts him in the same bracket as Tottenham's "speed machine" Micky van de Ven.
Interestingly, United are also monitoring Van de Ven, along with Toulouse's Charlie Cresswell, Braga's Bright Arrey-Mbi, and Sporting CP's Ousmane Diomande. While Sedi Kinteh may not be the most glamorous name on the list, his unique blend of size and speed could make him the perfect fit for a United defense in need of fresh legs and youthful energy.
