The SEC Softball Tournament is officially underway, and the competition is nothing short of electric. With six teams ranked in the top 10 of the RPI, the SEC is proving once again why it's the premier conference in the sport. To put it in perspective, even the 13th-seeded Ole Miss Rebels, who limped to a 6-18 conference record, still boast a national RPI of 22. As our editor at the Cup would say, "It's the SEC, mane."
Ole Miss closed out the regular season on a high note, securing back-to-back walk-off wins over No. 16 Mississippi State. Even if they had been swept, a tiebreaker over Auburn would have kept them at the 13 seed. But those two victories are a massive boost for their RPI and postseason hopes. The Rebels kick off tournament play tonight at 6:00 against the 12th-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks, a team they haven't faced yet this season. South Carolina finished one game ahead of Ole Miss in the standings but sits three spots lower in the RPI rankings.
It's win or go home from the first pitch, so a victory for the Rebels would set up a second-round showdown with Tennessee. There's good reason for optimism: Ole Miss took two of three from the Vols in Knoxville earlier this season. Still, Tennessee holds the No. 8 RPI, so it promises to be a battle regardless of past results.
Looking further ahead, No. 4 Texas awaits the winner of that second-round game. The Longhorns swept a two-game series against Ole Miss back in mid-March, both via run-rule. No. 1 Oklahoma is the likely opponent in round four, with Alabama looming in the championship game. The Rebels went 0-6 against those two powerhouses, with three of those losses being blowouts. But in a single-elimination tournament, anything can happen.
