The Seattle Mariners are facing a roster decision that goes beyond the usual chatter about their starting rotation. While most fans are focused on how the team will handle Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo in a six-man rotation, another name is quietly demanding attention: Victor Robles.

Robles was a feel-good story in 2024. After being designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals—the same team he helped win the 2019 World Series—the Mariners took a chance on the former top prospect. It paid off in a big way. Over 77 games, Robles hit .328 and swiped 30 bases, earning himself a two-year, $10 million contract extension.

But the magic hasn't carried over. In 2025, Robles struggled through injuries and a suspension, managing just a .245 average in 32 games. Fast forward to 2026, and the Mariners have used him primarily as a platoon option against left-handed pitching. In just 13 at-bats, he's hitting .231, and a right pec strain has limited him to only five games so far.

Now, Robles is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma, and the numbers aren't pretty. Through 29 at-bats, he's hitting just .207 with one RBI and two stolen bases—though his .357 on-base percentage offers a small silver lining. He's been on assignment since May 3, and the Mariners will soon have to make a call.

The question being asked in Seattle circles is whether the team could move on from Robles entirely. One scenario gaining traction is the possibility of designating Robles for assignment and calling up Brennen Davis, a younger option who could inject fresh energy into the outfield. While it's not the most likely outcome, it's a conversation worth having—especially if the Mariners want to keep their roster nimble as the season heats up.

For a team that prides itself on smart roster management, this decision could define their outfield depth for the rest of the year. Whether Robles finds his 2024 form or the Mariners turn the page, it's a storyline worth watching closely.
