The Dallas Cowboys' 2026 schedule is officially out, and as expected, they'll kick off the season with a familiar foe: the New York Giants. This Week 1 matchup has become a staple of NFL openers, marking the ninth time in 20 years these two division rivals will meet in the season's first game. While that frequency might feel a bit repetitive, the timing of this year's opener could give Dallas a significant edge.

The Giants have struggled for much of the past decade, so it's easy to overlook their roster. But under new head coach John Harbaugh, New York is showing signs of a turnaround. Harbaugh's presence alone raises the team's floor, and the Giants boast some real talent—especially on offense, with a young core featuring quarterback Jaxson Dart, running back Cam Skattebo, and wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Nabers, drafted sixth overall in 2024, is the headliner. In just 19 career games, he's already faced the Cowboys three times, including a standout performance in last season's offensive shootout between these two teams. However, the Giants have lost all three of those matchups, and Nabers might have to wait for his fourth chance at Dallas.

ESPN reported Thursday that Nabers underwent a second procedure on his right knee earlier this offseason—a "cleanup" surgery following his recovery from a torn ACL. The initial injury required a full meniscus repair, and this additional procedure could delay his return. If Nabers misses the season opener, it's a major blow to New York's offensive firepower and a clear advantage for a Cowboys defense looking to start the year strong.

For Dallas fans, this is the kind of break that can set the tone for the entire season. A healthy Cowboys squad facing a Giants team without their top playmaker? That's a recipe for a statement win right out of the gate.
