In a surprising turn of events at UFC 328, Sean Strickland silenced critics by defeating Khamzat Chimaev via split decision—a result that validated the UFC's controversial matchmaking and sent shockwaves through the middleweight division. Now, the newly crowned contender is calling for order in the rankings, throwing his support behind a rematch with Nassourdine Imavov.
When the UFC initially booked Strickland against Chimaev, many fans and analysts cried foul. The consensus No. 1 contender, Nassourdine Imavov, was left waiting on the sidelines while the promotion opted for a high-stakes, high-drama matchup. But after a record-breaking press conference—boasting the biggest numbers in years, according to UFC CEO Dana White—and Strickland's gritty victory, the decision seems to have paid off.
Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Strickland made it clear he wants the next title defense to follow tradition. "They say Nassourdine is next," he said. "I truly believe in UFC rankings. I think they f–king matter. I hate when guys jump it. So if that's who the UFC wants, if that's the rankings, that's who it is. Let's go."
It's a fight with history. Back in January 2023, Strickland and Imavov battled it out at UFC Vegas 67 in a short-notice main event that ended with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory for Strickland. Now, with both fighters at the top of their game, a rematch promises fireworks.
Imavov, who hasn't stepped into the Octagon since a September 2025 win over Caio Borralho, wasted no time responding on social media. "I'm gonna put your lights out," he tweeted, reigniting a rivalry that never truly cooled.
Strickland, ever the provocateur, shot back with characteristic flair: "F–king Nassourdine, are you really getting me on this f–king racism again? No, I can't avoid the racism, come on."
For now, Strickland plans to take a well-deserved break. "Me and my girl have been in camp for over six months," he explained. "We don't do things on weekends, we don't travel, we don't go out to eat. She's pretty much my dietitian. I am going to give her a break. Give me a little time, let my broken nose heal, and let's get back in there."
First, though, he'll be cheering on his friend Alex Pereira as the Brazilian attempts to make history and capture a third belt at the White House. After that, it's all business—and Strickland is ready to defend his spot the right way.
