Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and team President Kevin Demoff took a break from the gridiron to soak in some European football magic on Monday. The duo traveled to London to witness Arsenal's thrilling 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semifinal—a win that sent the Gunners marching toward the final against defending champion Paris Saint-Germain.
It's no random trip. Rams owner Stan Kroenke also owns Arsenal, creating a unique cross-Atlantic bond between the two franchises. And for McVay, this was more than just a front-row seat to a high-stakes match. He's developed a close friendship with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta since they first connected in 2019, and the two have become trusted sounding boards for each other—sharing insights on leadership, team culture, and what it takes to win at the highest level.
McVay opened up about that special relationship last October, saying, "It's special because I think there's an understanding of a willingness to share. There are so many things that are similar and in alignment even if it might be different arenas or different sports, but leadership, trying to get everybody on the same page. What are the things that you want to commit to with your values and principles? I've gotten to have a relationship with Mikel Arteta that I really cherish and value, learned a lot from watching the way that he moves."
He added, "When we've gotten a chance to visit with one another, had a chance to connect with the Nuggets, Avalanche people and it's really special. I think with Kevin's involvement and interactions and exposure to all parts of it, it's helpful to really be able to see what it looks like. I think you're seeing all their organizations that they oversee. It's not by coincidence that it starts at the top and why they've been successful and why they do things the right way."
For any sports fan—or apparel enthusiast—this is a reminder that great teams and great leaders share a universal playbook. Whether you're suiting up for a Rams game or cheering from the stands at the Emirates, the values of teamwork, discipline, and passion never go out of style.
