The New York Jets may have found a hidden gem in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. Safety VJ Payne, fresh off a standout career at Kansas State, joins the team with plenty of potential and a chip on his shoulder. At 6'3" and 206 pounds, the 22-year-old brings impressive length and athleticism to the Jets' secondary—qualities that had many analysts projecting him as a mid-round selection. That he was still available late on Day 3 was a pleasant surprise for Gang Green.

Payne's journey to the NFL began as a three-star high school recruit. He made an immediate impact at Kansas State, starting the season opener as a true freshman in 2022. After a reserve role for much of that year, he closed strong with three starts and never looked back. For the remainder of his college career, Payne anchored the Wildcats as a starting strong safety, earning two-time All-Big 12 honorable mention honors. Over 52 games with 42 starts, he piled up more than 200 tackles and four interceptions.

His most statistically productive season came in 2024, when he set career highs with 64 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups, and two interceptions. However, his 2025 campaign may have been his finest overall, even if the numbers didn't pop as much. Scouts praised his consistency and football IQ, which earned him another honorable mention nod.

Payne turned heads at the NFL Scouting Combine with his raw athleticism. He blazed a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash, posted a 127-inch broad jump, and added a 35-inch vertical—all impressive marks for a player his size. He also participated in the Shrine Bowl, further boosting his draft stock. At his pro day, Payne completed agility drills with average results for his frame, though he did not perform a bench press during the pre-draft process.

While Payne's lanky frame could benefit from adding a few more pounds, his length and speed are undeniable assets. He has the tools to develop into a reliable depth piece or even a future starter in the Jets' defensive backfield.
