The PGA Championship kicked off with a historic logjam at the top, marking the biggest tie for the lead after an opening round in 57 years. At the center of it all? None other than defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who showcased his trademark composure on a challenging day at Aronimink Golf Club in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Scheffler carded a 3-under 67, thanks to two lengthy birdie putts and a fortunate break on the 17th hole. This performance earned him a share of the lead alongside six other players—a group that includes former PGA champion Martin Kaymer, whose presence is perhaps the most surprising of the bunch. It's the 13th time Scheffler has held at least a share of the lead in a major, but remarkably, this is the first time he's done so after the opening round.

The seven-way tie at 67 also features Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jaeger, Min Woo Lee, Ryo Hisatsune, and Alex Smalley. This logjam is the largest since nine players shared the lead at the 1969 PGA Championship at NCR Country Club in Dayton, Ohio. And it could have been even bigger—Garrick Higgo shot a 69 but was hit with a two-shot penalty for being 10 seconds late to the tee, a costly mistake before he even swung a club.

Meanwhile, Masters champion Rory McIlroy had a rough finish, bogeying his final four holes to post a 74. That score sent him straight to the practice range for much of the afternoon, as he looks to bounce back in the rounds ahead.

With so many players in contention, this PGA Championship is already shaping up to be a thrilling battle. Stay tuned for more updates from Aronimink, where every shot counts.
