Scottie Scheffler kicked off the 2026 PGA Championship in impressive style at Aronimink on Thursday, carding five birdies, two bogeys, and 11 pars in his opening round.
The 29-year-old world number one showcased his trademark precision, driving the ball exceptionally well and delivering rock-solid putting. With the course playing firm and fast, the conditions at Aronimink seem tailor-made for the Dallas native's game, setting him up perfectly to defend the PGA Championship title he won last year at Quail Hollow.
Scheffler, who always seems to elevate his play when the challenge is toughest, is now poised to seize the outright lead on Friday. Reflecting on the day-one test, he shared his thoughts with reporters.
"I felt like it was really challenging to make a lot of birdies," Scheffler said. "The pins, with the way these green complexes are, they could have the winning score be whatever they want it to be. There's some places where they could hide pins, and it's basically impossible to make a birdie. So it depends a lot on the course setup, but overall today, it was just really hard to make a lot of birdies, especially with the wind. When you get out of position, you can run the ball up onto the greens, but it depends if you can get a lie in the rough or not."
Asked whether he relishes tough courses, Scheffler responded, "Anytime the golf course is playing tough, I feel like each week you're kind of playing against a golf course. This course has affected a pretty good bunch today."
With his conservative yet masterful playing style, Scheffler is a near-certainty to be contending for the PGA Championship down the back nine on Sunday. For golf fans and apparel enthusiasts alike, his steady performance is a reminder that preparation and precision—on the course and in your gear—make all the difference when the stakes are highest.
