In a major boost for Premiership Women's Rugby, Scotland centre Meryl Smith has penned a new contract extension with the Bristol Bears, solidifying her place as a key playmaker for the club.
The versatile 24-year-old, who can also slot in at fly-half, joined the Bears in 2023 after impressing at Edinburgh University. Since making her Scotland debut in 2022, Smith has earned 26 caps and is currently a vital part of the national team's Women's Six Nations campaign.
Smith's journey hasn't been without its hurdles. After a devastating ruptured anterior cruciate ligament sidelined her for 18 months—forcing her to miss the Women's Rugby World Cup—she made a triumphant return to action in January. Her comeback is a testament to her resilience and determination.
Bristol head coach Scott Lawson couldn't hide his excitement about retaining Smith, calling her one of the league's "standout playmakers." "The influence she has on our game is huge," Lawson said. "Her vision, decision-making, and ability to bring others into the game make her such an important player for us. Since returning from injury, her leadership and drive have been a crucial factor in some key wins for the team. Her attitude and commitment to come back from such a serious, long-term injury has been truly inspirational."
Smith is the latest in a growing list of international stars committing their futures to the Bears. She follows Scotland teammate Evie Gallagher, as well as England internationals Christiana Balogun, Delaney Burns, and Demelza Short, who have all signed new terms in recent weeks—underscoring Bristol's ambition to build a powerhouse squad.
Reflecting on her decision, Smith expressed deep gratitude for the support system at Bristol. "This environment has helped me grow so much as a player, and I'm incredibly grateful to all of the coaches, staff, and my teammates for the support they've given me, especially throughout my injury rehabilitation," she said. "Spending 18 months out was a huge challenge, but the medical and performance staff were unbelievable in helping me get back on the pitch and supporting me every step of the way."
With Smith locked in, Bristol Bears fans have plenty to look forward to as the team continues to rise in the Premiership Women's Rugby standings.
