Schalke 04 are back where they belong. The Royal Blues secured their return to the Bundesliga as 2. Bundesliga champions, clinching promotion with two games to spare after a decisive win over Fortuna Düsseldorf. It marks the end of a two-year absence from Germany's top flight, and captain Kenan Karaman is quick to credit one man in particular: Edin Džeko.
"Edin is a world-class player with an incredible career," Karaman told the Bundesliga's official channels after the match. "I was very happy the transfer went through. And I knew straight away that he would help us."
Džeko, who joined Schalke on a free transfer, has been nothing short of transformative. The 40-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina striker made an immediate impact, netting six goals in just eight appearances before a shoulder injury—sustained during Bosnia's stunning World Cup qualification win over Italy—sidelined him. His return against Düsseldorf marked a triumphant comeback, and his presence has been a game-changer for the club.
"Of course, his goals have been hugely important, but also his presence as a person and a character in the dressing room," Karaman reflected. "Having a leader like that, with his experience, is very valuable for the team."
The captain also highlighted Džeko's understanding of the club's stature. "He knows that Schalke is a big club with incredible supporters, and that the club belongs in the top division. That's clear. I think he made a very conscious decision to join Schalke."
Beyond Džeko's impact, Karaman praised the appointment of Frank Baumann to the board for bringing much-needed stability. "He definitely changed our approach, especially compared to the last few years," Karaman said. "Frank is an expert in his field, with many years of experience at another big club, Werder Bremen. His calmness and clarity are very good for the club."
With promotion secured early, Schalke's blend of veteran leadership and fresh energy has the club poised for a strong return to the Bundesliga—and fans can already feel the excitement building for the season ahead.
