The cricketing world is buzzing with the announcement of Saudi Arabia's newest venture—the Dunes League T20. Set to launch this October in the scenic city of Taif, near Jeddah, this six-team franchise tournament is officially sanctioned by the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation. And to add a touch of star power, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been named the league's ambassador, bringing his legendary flair to the promotional campaign.
This isn't Saudi Arabia's first foray into cricket. Over the past few years, the kingdom has been quietly building its presence—sponsoring ICC events, hosting the IPL player auction in 2024, and forging a working partnership with the UAE's ILT20 last year. The SACF also secured a long-term deal to stage the FairBreak Women's T20 Challenge, though its debut has been delayed due to regional tensions. Each step has been a calculated move toward something bigger, and the Dunes League T20 is the next logical leap.
The league is being developed in collaboration with the South Asian Network and two prominent talent agencies: Unique Sports Group, which represents England speedster Jofra Archer, and Prolithic, the agency behind India batter Abhishek Sharma. This partnership signals a serious intent to attract top-tier talent, both established and emerging.
Player eligibility rules have been carefully crafted to stay within ICC thresholds. Each team can field a maximum of four cricketers who have played Full Member international cricket in the last two years. Beyond that, the league is expected to lean heavily on retired international stars who continue to shine on the global franchise circuit. Top player salaries could reach USD 100,000, making it an attractive destination for seasoned pros looking for one more stint in the spotlight.
With Yuvraj Singh as its face and a growing infrastructure behind it, the Dunes League T20 is poised to make a splash. Whether this sparks disruption in the IPL remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Saudi Arabia is ready to play ball on the world stage.
