The Derby della Capitale is set to ignite this Sunday, but not everyone is thrilled about the kickoff time. Lega Serie A has confirmed that the highly anticipated clash between Roma and Lazio will take place in the early afternoon slot, leaving Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri fuming.

Sarri had long voiced his frustration over this scheduling, calling it an insult to such a historic fixture. With temperatures rising in May, he argued that an early kickoff would dampen the intensity of the Rome derby—a match that deserves the spotlight of a prime-time slot. In a bold move, he even threatened to boycott all pre- and post-match media duties.

However, Lega Serie A president Luigi De Siervo insists the decision was unavoidable. Lazio's midweek Coppa Italia clash with Inter Milan on Wednesday ruled out a Saturday fixture, while Sunday afternoon was already off the table due to the Italian Open tennis tournament—featuring home favorite Jannik Sinner—taking place at the same sports complex as the Stadio Olimpico.

An evening kickoff, which many fans craved, was never a realistic option. Citing past incidents of crowd trouble in Rome, De Siervo explained that safety concerns made a nighttime derby impossible. "Unfortunately, a derby in Rome cannot be played in the evening," he said. "We hope to see Sinner in a final later that day, but the derby must start at 12:30 CET."

To add to the complexity, this isn't an isolated case. Four other Serie A matches will also kick off simultaneously this weekend, as league rules require teams fighting for the same objectives—like European spots or survival—to play at the same time in the final rounds of the season. With Roma and Lazio both in the thick of the battle, the early start adds an extra layer of pressure.

Despite the controversy, one thing is certain: the Derby della Capitale will deliver drama, passion, and edge-of-your-seat action, no matter the time slot. For fans gearing up to watch, make sure you're dressed for the occasion—because this is Serie A at its most electric.
