Excitement is building in the Sunshine State as the defending FHSAA Class 2A state champions, Sarasota (FL) Cardinal Mooney Cougars, have officially released their 2026 football schedule. Coming off a dominant 52-28 victory over Jacksonville’s The Bolles School in December—securing their third state title and second in three years—the Cougars are poised to defend their crown with a mix of returning stars and key new additions.
The South Suncoast region (covering Charlotte, Manatee, and Sarasota counties) has long been a hotbed for college prospects, and Cardinal Mooney is no exception. While the team loses some talent from last season, they’ll be powered by 2027 quarterback Davin Davidson, who threw for 2,360 yards and 23 touchdowns, and running back Connail Jackson, who rushed for an impressive 2,452 yards and 39 touchdowns. Adding to the offensive firepower is a major offseason pickup: 2027 running back Toryeon James, who transferred from Sarasota Riverview. James was among Florida’s top ten rushers last season, racking up over 2,000 yards for the Rams.
The Cougars’ 2026 slate features a mix of tough in-state matchups and classic rivalries. Highlights include a Kickoff Classic against powerhouse Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas on August 14, followed by a challenging game at Miami True North Classical Academy on September 4. The schedule also features key district battles against Bradenton Braden River, Clearwater Central Catholic, and a season finale against Smart En Academy on November 4. Game times will be announced at a later date, so stay tuned.
Cardinal Mooney finished the 2025 season with a stellar 14-1 record and ranked No. 4 in the final Florida Massey Rankings. With a potent offense and a championship pedigree, the Cougars are ready to make another deep run. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a college scout tracking future stars, this is a schedule you won’t want to miss. Gear up for the season and show your Cougar pride!
