San Francisco 49ers Could Trade Recent Draft Pick

The San Francisco 49ers are no strangers to bold roster moves, and with the 2026 NFL Draft class now in the rearview mirror, the team's depth chart is coming into sharper focus—and it could spell the end for one of their recent draft picks.

After trading out of the first round, the 49ers faced plenty of scrutiny for their eight-player draft class. But as general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan begin shaping the final 53-man roster, some of those new additions are already forcing tough conversations.

One name generating buzz is Indiana running back Kaelon Black, selected in the third round with the 90th overall pick. His arrival could signal a change of scenery for Isaac Guerendo, the 49ers' fourth-round pick (129th overall) from the 2024 NFL Draft.

According to Vic Tafur, The Athletic's 49ers insider, Guerendo "seems like he is buried (on the depth chart) and will be looking for a new team." While Tafur stops short of predicting a trade, a reasonable offer could certainly get the 49ers' attention.

Guerendo had a promising start as a rookie, starting three games and appearing in 16 total, racking up 420 yards and four touchdowns on 84 carries. But last season, he saw action in 14 games without a single carry—a telling sign that his role had diminished. With Black now in the mix, Guerendo's path to playing time is even more crowded.

The 49ers' running back room is stacked: starter Christian McCaffrey, backups Jordan James, Black, Guerendo, Patrick Taylor Jr., and Sincere McCormick. While McCaffrey remains the engine of the offense, the team is still searching for a reliable complement to give their All-Pro a breather. And it appears Guerendo may not be the long-term answer they were hoping for.

With training camp on the horizon, all eyes will be on how this backfield battle unfolds—and whether Guerendo's time in San Francisco is coming to an early end.
