The San Diego Padres just wrapped up a tough week—their hardest stretch since Opening Week—but they’re heading into a key road trip with their heads held high. After dropping five of their last eight games, the Friars managed to avoid a sweep by taking down the Chicago White Sox in yesterday’s win, preserving their sweep-less record in 2026.

That victory was exactly what San Diego needed. Newcomer Griffin Canning made a strong debut, pitching five innings of one-run ball. His only mistake came in the third inning when Drew Romo took him deep for a home run. But Canning settled in nicely, striking out seven batters and keeping the Padres within striking distance. It was a performance that showed why the Friars brought him in.

The offense finally showed some life in the fourth inning, plating three runs to take the lead. But Chicago answered back with a two-run shot off Adrian Morejon to tie the game. Morejon showed flashes of brilliance, striking out the side in the sixth, but he ran into trouble in the seventh before recording three outs. From there, Jason Adam handled the eighth inning, setting the stage for a clutch moment.

Xander Bogaerts delivered the go-ahead run with a swinging bunt in the ninth—a play that might not make the highlight reels but was exactly what the Padres needed. Mason Miller then shut the door in the bottom of the inning, striking out three batters to seal the win.

Now, the Friars turn their attention to San Francisco for a crucial division series against the Giants. But if they want to keep the momentum going, the offense will need to wake up just a little more. Consistency at the plate has been the missing piece, and facing a Giants team that’s hungry for a win won’t make it easy.

San Francisco is handing the ball to McDonald for his 2026 debut. The No. 16 prospect in the Giants’ system hasn’t exactly lit up the stat sheet. He was just optioned to Triple-A on Friday before being called back up to start today’s game. The big question is how deep he’ll go—or how long the Giants will let him stay in. He was in the bullpen as the 27th man but never got the call, so it’s anyone’s guess what San Francisco expects from the career 3.88 ERA minor league starter.

On the other side, the Padres will counter with Vásquez, who has been nothing short of phenomenal. He was originally slated to start Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox but was swapped out to give Canning a more comfortable debut at Petco Park. Vásquez owns a stellar 2.94 ERA with 34 strikeouts over 33 2/3 innings. It’s his first start of the series, and the Friars are hoping he can keep the momentum rolling against a division rival.

As the Padres head north, one thing is clear: they’ve got the pitching to compete. Now, it’s up to the bats to find their rhythm and make this road trip a statement.
