Sam Dekker is trading in his sneakers for a clipboard. The former Sheboygan Lutheran and Wisconsin standout has officially stepped into the coaching ranks, accepting an assistant coaching position with the University of South Carolina men's basketball team, announced on May 15.
Dekker's move to the sidelines feels like a natural next step. Known for his sharp basketball IQ and frequent social media breakdowns of the game, he's long been pegged as a future coach. It also runs in the family—his father, Todd Dekker, was a longtime coach at Sheboygan Lutheran and guided Sam during his high school days.
The transition comes after Dekker spent the last two seasons playing professionally in Spain, though injuries limited his action this past year. Had those setbacks not derailed his trajectory after being a first-round NBA Draft pick by the Houston Rockets, Dekker might have followed a path similar to fellow Wisconsin high school legends like Tyler Herro or Tyrese Haliburton.
Now, he's joining a familiar environment at South Carolina. Gamecocks head coach Lamont Paris was an assistant under Bo Ryan at Wisconsin during Dekker's college career, making the reunion a natural fit.
"Development of each player's individual abilities is as important now as it ever has been in college basketball," South Carolina shared in a statement. "Sam's unique experiences and skill set will allow him to have a tremendous impact on our players and program immediately. He is a winner through and through, and I am thrilled to add him to our staff."
For Dekker, the excitement is mutual. "I couldn't be more excited to be a part of Gamecock Basketball," he said. With his playing experience, coaching lineage, and deep understanding of the game, Dekker is poised to make an immediate impact in Columbia—this time, from the bench.
