Former India and Mumbai fast bowler Salil Ankola is undergoing treatment for severe depression at a rehab centre near Pune. His wife, Ria Ankola, confirmed he was admitted after struggling to cope with his mother's passing in October 2024. The family is optimistic about his recovery, highlighting his fighter spirit and the support he has received from the cricket fraternity.

Former India and Mumbai fast bowler Salil Ankola—also a former national selector—is currently undergoing treatment for severe depression at a mental health care center near Pune. The news comes as a sobering reminder that even the toughest athletes face battles off the field.

Ankola's wife, Ria Ankola, confirmed that he was admitted after struggling to cope with the passing of his mother in October 2024. "He was very upset and unable to process her loss," she shared. "Recently, when he saw himself breaking down and falling sick often, he chose to get treated in a peaceful environment."

Despite the difficult moment, the family remains optimistic. "We are very happy he chose to take a break instead of completely breaking down," Ria added. "He's recovering well, working out regularly, and will be back to his first love—cricket—soon. He's always been a fighter and comes out stronger."

This isn't the first time Ankola has faced personal challenges. Nearly two decades ago, he underwent rehab for alcohol addiction, but sources confirm he quit drinking long ago. This time, it's depression—a condition that has impacted many in the high-pressure world of professional sports.

Ankola, 58, has remained connected to the game as a commentator for domestic cricket and the IPL. He served as a national selector from January 2023 to August 2024, and was Mumbai's chief selector from 2021 to 2023. His playing career included a memorable Test debut alongside legends Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis against Pakistan in Karachi in 1989, where he took two wickets. He also played 20 ODIs, claiming 13 wickets.

The cricket community has rallied around him. "The fraternity has been very kind in supporting his decision to take a small break to heal," Ria noted. As Ankola works through this tough chapter, his story reminds us that mental health is as important as physical fitness—both on and off the pitch.
