In a week filled with standout performances across the metro, two young athletes have captured the spotlight as the Des Moines Register's Athletes of the Week for May 3-9.
Saleah Vivanh-Vong, a golfer from Des Moines East, claimed the female honor with an impressive 57% of the vote. She delivered a masterclass at the Dragon Invitational on May 4, held at Jester Park Golf Course in Granger. Vivanh-Vong not only led her team but dominated the field, finishing as the individual medalist with a stellar 2-over-par round of 74 over 18 holes—three strokes ahead of the competition. That kind of precision and poise is exactly what sets a champion apart.
On the boys' side, Dowling Catholic track and field standout Jackson Miller sprinted to victory with a commanding 70% of the vote. Miller anchored the third leg of the 4x100-meter relay team, which blazed to a state-leading time of 41.32 seconds at the CIML boys track and field meet on May 7 in Waukee. That mark even eclipsed their previous best of 41.34 set at the prestigious Drake Relays in April. Not one to rest on relay success alone, Miller also placed second in the open 100-meter dash with a swift 10.80 seconds.
Both athletes showcase the dedication and drive that fuel great performances—qualities that resonate whether you're on the course, the track, or simply pursuing your personal best. Their achievements remind us that hard work and focus can lead to unforgettable moments in sports.
