The New Orleans Saints, armed with a new franchise quarterback in Tyler Shough, are clearly building to contend in the NFC South by 2026. While splashy offensive additions like Travis Etienne Jr. and Noah Fant have dominated their offseason, attention is now turning to a defense that bid farewell to cornerstone veterans like Demario Davis and Alontae Taylor. The biggest question mark, however, hangs over the future of legendary edge rusher Cameron Jordan, who remains a free agent and is unlikely to return.

This looming void on the defensive line makes the upcoming draft critical. In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Peter Schrager projects the Saints to use the 8th overall pick on a dynamic solution: Miami's disruptive edge rusher, Ruben Bain Jr. Bain is coming off a formidable 9.5-sack season where he was a constant force in the Hurricanes' run to the National Championship, establishing himself as one of the country's most feared pass rushers.

Schrager notes that despite some critiques about arm length, Bain's proven power and production have cemented his status as a top-10 talent. For a Saints team in transition, selecting Bain represents a direct and powerful investment in the future of their pass rush, providing a potential long-term successor to Jordan's legacy. While a dynamic wide receiver like Ohio State's Carnell Tate could also be in play, securing a blue-chip defender like Bain may be the strategic move to rebalance the roster and build a complete contender.
