The New Orleans Saints have spent this offseason laser-focused on one thing: building a winning offense around quarterback Tyler Shough. From signing veteran running back Travis Etienne Jr. and guard David Edwards in free agency to snagging wide receiver Jordyn Tyson in the first round and tight end Oscar Delp in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the front office has made it clear—they want Shough to thrive.

But even with all that shiny new talent, there's a glaring weak spot that could unravel the whole plan: right guard Cesar Ruiz. According to ESPN's Ben Solak, the Saints might already have a replacement for the $44 million lineman waiting in the wings. "The weakest point is Ruiz at right guard," Solak writes. He suggests that if rookie Jeremiah Wright can get up to speed quickly, the coaching staff should have no problem pulling the trigger on a change. "I'd expect them to have a quick hook on Ruiz to finish the offensive line facelift and really start running people into the ground."

Ruiz, who was once a promising piece of the Saints' interior line, hasn't been able to recapture that early-career form. If he stumbles out of the gate this season, the team could pivot to Wright—a fourth-round rookie out of the 2026 draft who checks in at a massive 6-foot-5 and 348 pounds. That's a lot of power to plug into the line, and for a team that needs its best five blockers on the field to protect Shough and open up running lanes, Wright's size and potential could be too tempting to ignore.

This season is a make-or-break moment for New Orleans. Every snap, every block, every yard matters if Shough is going to develop into the star they believe he can be. If that means benching a high-priced veteran like Ruiz to give a hungry rookie a shot, the Saints shouldn't hesitate. Offensive line play isn't just about names or contracts—it's about who gets the job done. And with Wright waiting in the wings, the pressure is on Ruiz to prove he's still the answer.
