The 2026 NFL schedule has finally dropped, and for New Orleans Saints fans, it's a mixed bag of excitement and missed opportunities. Under new head coach Kellen Moore, the Saints will make their return to prime time—but just barely. After being completely shut out of night games in 2025, the team has secured exactly one prime-time slot this season.
The big moment comes in Week 4, when the Saints host the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football, Oct. 5. It's a renewal of one of the NFL's most storied rivalries, and it marks New Orleans' first appearance under the bright lights since Moore took over. But here's where the schedule gets a little frustrating: the NFL had a golden chance to schedule this game a week earlier. Sept. 28, 2026, falls just three days after the 20-year anniversary of the Saints' emotional return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina—a Monday night game in 2006 that saw New Orleans demolish those same Falcons in an iconic rout. The league clearly missed a storytelling opportunity, but Saints fans are used to that by now.
Still, there's a silver lining: at least the Saints are getting some respect. In 2026, five teams—the Jets, Cardinals, Titans, Dolphins, and Raiders—won't appear in any night games at all. The Saints and Browns are the only two teams with just one prime-time appearance each. Compare that to the Rams, who lead the league with seven night games, or the Chiefs, Packers, Bills, and Seahawks, each with six. Even NFC South rivals Atlanta, Carolina, and Tampa Bay each get three prime-time slots.
But don't count the Saints out just yet. If they play well early in the season, they could be flexed into a Sunday night game later on. After Thanksgiving, New Orleans has a manageable stretch: home games against the Packers, Cardinals, and Buccaneers, plus road trips to face the Panthers, Buccaneers, and Falcons. Before last season, the Saints hadn't had fewer than three night games since 2017, when they had just one—a Sunday night matchup against, you guessed it, the Falcons.
For now, Saints fans will have to circle Oct. 5 on their calendars. It might only be one night under the lights, but with Kellen Moore at the helm and a heated rivalry on tap, it promises to be a memorable one.
