The Gaels are stacking up.

Saint Mary's basketball just sent a loud message to the college hoops world: The Gaels are stacking up.

On Monday, the program celebrated a landmark recruiting victory, landing a top 50 blue-chip prospect in McDonald's All-American Darius Bivins. This isn't just another signing—it's a historic one. Bivins becomes the first McDonald's All-American to ever commit to Saint Mary's, a testament to how far the program has come under head coach Mickey McConnell.

A Virginia native, Bivins is ranked as the No. 8 point guard in the 2026 class and the No. 46 overall recruit by ESPN. That elite status comes from his ability to score in bunches from anywhere on the court—a skill set that fills a major need for a Gaels team looking for more playmakers on offense.

Scouts rave about Bivins' advanced feel for the game and impressive court vision, but his efficiency is what truly stands out. He's been nearly automatic from the free-throw line, shooting over 90 percent. That kind of reliability is a coach's dream, and it's easy to see why McConnell is thrilled to add him to the mix.

Bivins had plenty of options—Texas Tech, Miami, Houston, South Florida, Stanford, and VCU all came calling. But what sealed the deal for the star recruit was the culture McConnell has built in his first full season at the helm.

"Opportunity to play a major role right away and the staff was transparent. The team has a brotherhood vibe," Bivins told ESPN. "Head coach Mickey McConnell is a super chill guy off the court. His plan is for me to play both on and off the ball. He played the position at Saint Mary's and he was a really good player."

With Bivins on board, the Gaels are poised to build on their latest NCAA Tournament run—and they're doing it with a program-first talent that signals bigger things ahead.
