Patriots All-Pro Kevin Byard was very complimentary of second-year safety Craig Woodson following his promising rookie season.

When a veteran All-Pro safety like Kevin Byard speaks highly of a young teammate, it's time to take notice. Byard, now a key leader for the New England Patriots' defense, recently shared his excitement about second-year safety Craig Woodson, who turned heads during his rookie campaign.

"I think he's a very talented player," Byard told reporters on Tuesday, reflecting on Woodson's film from last season. "Just watching the film, seeing some things that he did last year, trying to build upon that. He's a very smart guy, very mature for only being in his second year. The way he goes about his business, I'm excited to play with him for sure."

While Byard is impressed with Woodson's overall game, he has one specific area where he wants to see growth: creating turnovers. Woodson logged just one interception in 2024, a crucial pick in the Divisional Round win over the Houston Texans. Byard, who has 36 career interceptions, knows exactly what it takes to turn good coverage into game-changing plays.

"Hopefully we can get some turnovers this year," Byard said simply, before diving into the art of the interception. "Anticipation is key. In this league, especially at safety, quarterbacks aren't throwing the ball to us. You may get one or two a year where the ball is just thrown right to you, and you just have to catch it. But to get the higher numbers, you have to anticipate route concepts based on film study, practice, and understanding what the offense is trying to do. Then it's just trusting your God-given abilities to go make those plays."

For Patriots fans, Byard's mentorship of Woodson signals a bright future in the secondary. With a veteran teacher who has a knack for finding the football, Woodson could be poised for a breakout sophomore season—one that might just include a few more trips to the end zone.
