Legendary Rye football coach Dino Garr has made his decision: he's not hanging up his whistle just yet. After 50 remarkable seasons and five state championships, the winningest coach in New York state history is returning to the sideline when the Garnets kick off against Cornwall on September 4 at Nugent Stadium.
For Garr, the choice was never about the accolades. "The state championships and personal milestones have never been high on my priority list," he said. "Last year was such a special year, and all those things coming together made it seem like it might be a good time to retire. But I've never done this for the wins or championships. I do it because coaching is something I enjoy, and it's been a gift I feel was given to me here in this great community."
After breaking the state's all-time wins record last September and capping it with a NYSPHSAA title, many assumed the 50-year veteran would step away on top. Instead, Garr huddled with his inner circle—family and close confidants—and came to a familiar conclusion. "I'm doing this because I feel I still can, and the school and community feel I still can. I'm not going to leave now because we won a state championship."
Rye administrators had begun discussing a succession plan just in case, but they gave Garr the time and space he needed. "They've been great," he noted. "They just asked me to let them know and told me they'd carry on as always until I said I wasn't coming back."
In March, Garr finally delivered the news: he's revved up for another season. Rye athletic director Susan Reid confirmed the decision, adding, "If you know coach Garr, you know it's not about the titles or records. If you ask him what his 'why' is, it's the players. It's always been about them."
For fans and players alike, the message is clear: the Garnets' sideline will have its familiar leader when the 2024 season begins. And for a coach who's spent half a century building a legacy, the next chapter is just beginning.
