As Rutgers Football gears up for the 2026 season, all eyes are on the backfield—and the big question on every fan's mind is: who will step up as the primary backup to star running back Antwan Raymond?
Raymond had a breakout campaign last year, establishing himself as one of the top rushers not just in the Big Ten, but across the entire country. After a season-ending injury to CJ Campbell opened the door, Raymond seized the opportunity, racking up 244 carries for 1,241 yards and 13 touchdowns. With that kind of production, it's no surprise he'll be the workhorse again this season.
But with Campbell moving on via the transfer portal, the backup role is wide open. Two names are generating the most buzz: Ja'Shon Benjamin and Clay Thevenin.
On the surface, their rushing numbers are remarkably similar. Benjamin carried the ball 68 times last season for 328 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Thevenin, meanwhile, had 131 carries for 634 yards and 8 touchdowns—also averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Statistically, they're neck and neck when you adjust for workload.
Where the race gets interesting, however, is in the passing game. Thevenin brings a valuable extra dimension as a receiver out of the backfield, hauling in 33 catches for 269 yards last season. Benjamin, by contrast, had just 4 receptions for 19 yards. That versatility could give Thevenin the edge, especially in an offense that likes to keep defenses guessing.
What makes this decision tricky is the coaching staff's clear belief in Benjamin. They've talked him up in press conferences and seem confident he can be a meaningful contributor—even if his snap count hasn't fully reflected that potential yet. Now that they've brought in a back with a different skill set, it's hard to predict exactly what they're looking for in that backup role.
Don't be surprised if Thevenin earns the nod thanks to his dual-threat ability. But either way, one of these talented backs will be waiting in the wings, ready to carry the load if Raymond needs a breather. For Rutgers fans, that's a good problem to have.
