Ideas on how to renovate Rutgers Basketball arena.

Rutgers athletics has long been playing catch-up when it comes to facilities, and the clock is ticking on one of its most critical projects: renovating Jersey Mike's Arena—or the RAC, as fans still call it. With the Big Ten setting a high bar, the Scarlet Knights need to step up their game off the court to match the competition on it.

At the heart of the matter is a naming rights deal with Jersey Mike's, which puts the arena's future on a fast break. The contract requires Rutgers to either build a completely new basketball arena or undergo a major renovation by 2029. If neither happens, Jersey Mike's can hit pause on the 20-year, $28 million sponsorship agreement. But here's the exciting part: a significant renovation could open the door to renegotiating that deal, potentially bringing in even more financial support from the sandwich chain—if they're game for it.

Rutgers Athletic Director Keli Zinn has already called an audible, confirming the university's plan to renovate rather than rebuild. They're actively searching for a design firm to assess the building's needs. Before his departure, former AD Pat Hobbs left behind a playbook of sorts: several fan-inspired renderings of a renovated arena, which give a glimpse of what could be.

On a recent podcast with The Knight Report, Zinn broke down the game plan. She emphasized that every upgrade is designed to enhance the fan experience, noting that nothing about the current arena hurts the action on the court. The focus areas? The bathrooms (a perennial complaint), the lack of premium seating, tricky navigation through the building, and even the seating capacity to some degree. As Zinn put it, "The only thing that stands in the way of us being a premier program in those programs (basketball, gymnastics, wrestling) is that competitive arena."

So, what's on the renovation wish list? Think of it as a full-court press to transform the RAC into a venue that rivals the best in the Big Ten. From upgraded concessions to modernized sightlines, every detail is aimed at making game day unforgettable—whether you're courtside or in the upper deck. For fans and players alike, this isn't just about bricks and mortar; it's about building a home that fuels the Scarlet Knights' rise.
