Alessia Russo scored twice on the final day of the WSL season as Arsenal secured a second-place finish with a 3-1 win at Liverpool.

Alessia Russo delivered a masterclass on the final day of the Women's Super League season, scoring twice to propel Arsenal to a commanding 3-1 victory over Liverpool and secure second place in the standings.

While the title ultimately went to Manchester City, the Gunners locked up an automatic spot in next season's Women's Champions League—a fitting reward for a campaign filled with grit and flair. And if not for Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk's heroics in the first half, the scoreline could have been far more lopsided.

It took until the 21st minute for Arsenal to break through. Russo, ever the opportunist, lifted her head to find Stina Blackstenius in the box, but the ball sailed over her teammate's head and slipped through Falk's legs for the opener. The goal sparked a wave of confidence.

Just past the half-hour mark, Arsenal doubled their lead with a beautifully worked short corner. Mariona Caldentey and Katie McCabe—making her final appearance for the club—combined seamlessly before Caldentey fired home from a tight angle. The Gunners were in full flow, and Russo struck again shortly after. Victoria Pelova, also playing her last match in an Arsenal shirt, sent a pinpoint cross from the right, and Russo swept home her 12th league goal of the season to make it 3-0.

Liverpool regrouped at halftime and tightened up defensively, giving Falk a quieter second half. The Reds even pulled one back through teenager Zara Shaw, who scrambled home from their first corner of the game in front of The Kop. But the damage was done.

The second half took on a more emotional tone as both sides honored departing players. McCabe, Beth Mead, Gemma Bonner, and Gemma Evans all received heartfelt farewells—a reminder that football is as much about the people as the points. For Arsenal, the win was a statement: they're not just finishing second—they're building something special.
