Russell Wilson, the 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback and Super Bowl champion, appears ready to swap his helmet for a microphone. According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, the free-agent signal-caller is in active negotiations with CBS Sports about joining their iconic pregame show, The NFL Today, potentially starting in the 2026 season.
This move makes perfect sense for both sides. Wilson already had a guest role on the show last season—essentially a media audition—and CBS has an open seat following Matt Ryan's departure to the Atlanta Falcons' front office. With Mike Tomlin also signing with NBC, the timing couldn't be better for Wilson to step into the spotlight.
Wilson brings undeniable star power to the table. He's arguably the biggest name an NFL media partner could hire as a new analyst. But CBS isn't putting all its eggs in one basket. The network has also reached out to Carolina Panthers legend Luke Kuechly, who impressed during his Monday Night Football Playbook altcast appearance last season and has been a steady voice on the Panthers' radio team since 2022.
Let's rewind Wilson's career: He was a superstar in Seattle, leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory and earning 10 Pro Bowl nods. But his trajectory took a sharp turn after a blockbuster trade to the Denver Broncos before the 2022 season. He went just 11-19 in two disastrous years in the Mile High City, and the Broncos took a massive cap hit to escape his $242 million contract. Since then, he's had brief stops in Pittsburgh and with the New York Giants, where he served as a backup to Jaxson Dart and even Jameis Winston in 2025.
Wilson certainly has the polish to excel as a TV analyst. He's articulate, camera-ready, and has the pedigree to command respect. However, one criticism that has followed him throughout his career is that he might be too polished—some question whether he comes across as genuine. If he can bring authentic insight and a bit of personality to the booth, this could be a game-changing move for both his post-playing career and CBS's pregame lineup.
