Rumor Explains Why SF 49ers Are Wasting There Time & Should Just Cut Brandon Aiyuk

If the San Francisco 49ers believe that patience will pay off in a trade for Brandon Aiyuk, a new report suggests they might be wasting their time. Let's break down why this situation has become a standoff that could end with the team cutting its losses.

After a breakout 2023 season, Aiyuk looked like a future star and a cornerstone of the 49ers roster. Fast forward two years, and the relationship between the team and the wide receiver has turned into a full-blown drama. It all started when Aiyuk held out for a new contract at the beginning of the 2024 season. He eventually got his deal, but then tore his ACL just seven games into the campaign. Instead of returning to the field in 2025, Aiyuk sat out the entire season due to an ongoing rift with the organization. A divorce this offseason seemed inevitable.

General manager John Lynch, however, has been holding out hope that a trade partner will emerge, believing that patience will yield some return rather than releasing Aiyuk for nothing. According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, that strategy is unlikely to work.

"If he's on their team in 2026, they have to pay him $27 million. If a team traded for him, it would have to pay him $27 million. If the 49ers cut him, they don't have to pay him that money — and the team that signs him could theoretically get him for less," Graziano explained. "Knowing the relationship is broken and that the Niners will almost certainly cut Aiyuk before having to pay his Week 1 salary, teams have decided they can afford to wait."

The logic is simple: no team wants to give up draft picks and take on a $27 million salary when they can simply wait for the 49ers to release Aiyuk and then sign him for a more team-friendly deal. It's a classic game of chicken, and the 49ers appear to be on the losing end.

If San Francisco wants to be petty, they could hold onto Aiyuk well into the preseason before finally cutting the 28-year-old. But at this point, the writing is on the wall: the 49ers need to stop wasting time and just move on. Sometimes, the best move is to cut your losses and focus on the future.
