The rugby community is in mourning after the tragic passing of 30-year-old Eugene Hanna, a player for New Zealand's Glenora Bears, who died on May 12 following a devastating injury sustained during the team's season opener.

Hanna was injured in a match against Te Atatu Roosters on May 2, just ten days before his death. Glenora Bears chairwoman Janet Hunt confirmed the heartbreaking news in a social media post, describing the injury as "tragically unsurvivable."

"Eugene was a valued player in our Premier Reserves squad and although a new Bears member, had good friends within the club," Hunt wrote. She also expressed deep gratitude to the Roosters players who rushed to help at the scene, as well as the EMTs and medical staff at Auckland Hospital.

"To his family, friends and teammates, we extend our sincere condolences. There are not enough words to express the unimaginable loss and grief you are feeling at this time. Forever in our hearts," she added.

The New Zealand Rugby League released a statement calling Hanna's death "heartbreaking" and "something we never want to see happen."

Hanna's impact extended far beyond the rugby field. He was also a passionate soccer player, and his team Renegades FC paid a touching tribute on Instagram. "Eugene is the heartbeat of Renegades. He was the biggest character, a brilliant player, but most importantly the kindest person," the post read.

Other former teams, including Lynn-Avon United AFC, also shared memories of the 30-year-old, remembering him as a smiling, friendly presence known by many club members. As the sports world comes together to honor his life, his legacy as a great teammate and an even better person will not be forgotten.
