Stephen Kolek is sent down after a terrific start.

The Kansas City Royals have shaken up their bullpen, promoting right-handed reliever Eric Cerantola from Triple-A Omaha and optioning Stephen Kolek to the Storm Chasers. This roster move comes on the heels of an impressive performance from Kolek, who earned the win in a spot start against Cleveland last night, allowing just three runs over six innings while filling in for the injured Noah Cameron.

Cerantola, a Canadian-born pitcher selected in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State, has been lights out in Omaha this season. With a stellar 1.42 ERA and 18 strikeouts across 12.2 innings, he’s clearly caught the Royals' attention. After being added to the 40-man roster following the 2024 season, Cerantola battled injuries and posted a 4.04 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 49 Triple-A innings last year. He also made two scoreless appearances for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, showing he can handle the big stage.

MLB Pipeline’s 2025 scouting report highlights what makes Cerantola a tantalizing arm: his fastball can touch 99-100 mph, though it’s a pitch he relies on heavily, making it vulnerable to contact due to average movement. His plus breaking ball—a sharp 82-87 mph offering he calls a curveball—is his primary weapon for missing bats and generating chase. He’s recently added a fringe-average changeup to his mix, which could help him neutralize left-handed hitters and make that electric fastball play up even more.

For Kolek, this demotion is a tough break despite his stellar form. Since being acquired from the San Diego Padres, he’s made six starts for Kansas City and delivered a Quality Start (at least six innings with three or fewer earned runs) in every single one, posting a sparkling 2.31 ERA in a Royals uniform. His consistency has been a bright spot, and fans can expect to see him back in the majors soon. For now, Cerantola gets his shot to bring that power arm to the big league bullpen.
