The Kansas City Royals edged out the Cleveland Guardians 5-3 in a game that showcased both offensive fireworks and missed opportunities. For the Guardians, it was a night where early promise gave way to a frustrating defeat.

Starting pitcher Gavin Williams had an uncharacteristically rough outing. Over six innings, he surrendered five runs on eight hits while walking two batters—though he did manage to strike out seven. The Royals jumped on him early, with Salvador Perez delivering a two-run single to center field in the bottom of the first, setting the tone for Kansas City's attack.

Cleveland's offense struggled with consistency, repeatedly going down 1-2-3 in innings. The bright spot came in the top of the fourth. Chase DeLauter led off with a single, extending his impressive on-base streak to 13 games. After José Ramírez grounded into a forceout, Kyle Manzardo—who continues to show signs of heating up at the plate—slapped a single to center, putting two runners on for Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins didn't disappoint, launching a three-run homer to left field that briefly put the Guardians ahead 3-2.

But the lead was short-lived. The Royals answered right back in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on two runs of their own to reclaim the advantage. Kansas City's bullpen held firm from there, shutting down any hopes of a Cleveland rally.

Guardians reliever Colin Holderman provided a silver lining, tossing two scoreless innings after replacing Williams in the seventh. He didn't allow a baserunner, and an overturned hit-by-pitch call in the eighth gave him the opportunity to send the Royals down in order. However, the Guardians couldn't muster any magic in the top of the ninth.

Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs. DeLauter's on-base streak continues to impress, and Manzardo's bat is showing life. The Guardians can still split the series in the next game, and at least the division-rival Tigers suffered an even worse defeat. For now, it's back to the drawing board for a Cleveland team that knows it let a winnable game slip away.
