The Kansas City Royals are off to a rocky start in the 2026 season, sitting at 17-20 and just 1.5 games back in the AL Central. While the division is still within reach, there's growing concern that things could unravel quickly over the next two months. If that happens, the Royals may be forced into seller mode at the MLB trade deadline, and one veteran pitcher could be their most valuable chip.

According to Robert Murray of Fansided, the trade candidate to watch isn't Kris Bubic and his expiring contract—it's Michael Wacha. The 34-year-old right-hander has quietly been one of the more reliable arms in baseball over the past few seasons, and his combination of performance and contract control makes him an intriguing target for contenders.

Wacha is under club control through the 2027 season on a $51 million deal, with a club option for 2028. That kind of affordability and stability is rare at the deadline, especially for a pitcher who owns a 3.05 ERA through seven starts this year. Over his 14-year career, Wacha has been consistently solid, but he's actually improved with age—posting a 3.43 ERA since 2022 compared to a 4.14 mark from 2013 through 2021.

"Wacha will draw plenty of interest if the Kansas City Royals are out of contention at the deadline," Murray wrote. "His numbers and his controllability should make him highly sought after in July and August."

Of course, the Royals should only consider moving Wacha if they're truly out of the race by early August. But if they are, few pitchers on the market could bring back a stronger return. For teams looking for help not just in 2026 but beyond, Wacha is a rare blend of proven postseason experience, steady production, and team-friendly terms.

For now, Kansas City fans will hope the team turns things around. But if the slide continues, Wacha's name will be one of the hottest on the trade block—and the Royals could cash in big.
