Chelsea's frustrating run of form continued with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, but interim manager Liam Rosenior was adamant his side deserved more from the match. Despite controlling large portions of the game, the Blues were undone by a solitary Matheus Cunha strike, marking their sixth loss in seven games across all competitions and a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat without scoring.
"Tonight, especially, was a really difficult result to take," Rosenior stated post-match. He pointed to a decisive moment where Chelsea, already down to ten men due to an injury, conceded from United's only shot on target. In contrast, his team created chance after chance. "We have wave after wave of attack, crosses in the box, moments that we don’t take advantage of. I think we’ve hit the woodwork four or five times."
Rosenior emphasized the need for resilience, urging his players to avoid a defeatist mentality. "What we can’t do is get into a cycle where we feel like it’s not going to be our day... We have to turn this around." He stood by his assessment of the performance, adding, "I saw a team that were dominant. We were dominant from the first moment of the game to the last but we have to take care of our moments better. That’s what’s costing us points."
The loss was compounded by significant injury concerns for two key players. Young winger Estevao was forced off early with a suspected hamstring injury, a blow that left him "devastated" and "crying at half-time," according to Rosenior. The injury occurred as he was breaking through on goal, a cruel twist in a game of fine margins.
There was also a worry for Enzo Fernandez on his return from a club-imposed suspension. Rosenior indicated the midfielder felt a problem in his calf, potentially cramp, and was receiving treatment immediately in hopes of being available for Chelsea's next fixture. For a team already struggling for results, maintaining a fit and competitive squad is more crucial than ever as they look to climb the table.
