Masters champion Rory McIlroy says it would say something about Bryson DeChambeau if he opted not to rejoin PGA Tour.

The golf world is buzzing with tension as Rory McIlroy fires a pointed remark at Bryson DeChambeau, questioning his competitive spirit if he chooses not to return to the PGA Tour. Speaking at the Truist Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, McIlroy made his stance crystal clear: "If you want to be the most competitive golfer you can be, this is the place to be. And if you don't want to play here, I think that says something about you."

This latest exchange comes amid swirling uncertainty over LIV Golf's future. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has confirmed reports that it will stop funding the breakaway league after this season, leaving players like DeChambeau in a precarious position. Currently competing at LIV's event on Donald Trump's course in Virginia, DeChambeau admitted he was "shocked" by the announcement and vowed to do everything possible to keep LIV alive beyond 2026. But he's also keeping his options open.

And one of those options? Staying far away from the PGA Tour—if the penalties for returning are too steep. DeChambeau revealed his thinking: "If we can't help find the funding and we don't find a solution, for me it's really enticing, depending on what everybody says on the Tour and what they're going to strike me with as a penalty. Considering what I could do for them, that's quite unfortunate in my opinion."

Instead of a Tour comeback, DeChambeau is eyeing a different path. He envisions growing his YouTube channel—already boasting 2.69 million subscribers—by three times, expanding into multiple languages, and playing only in tournaments that want him. It's a pivot that signals a shift from green jackets to green screens.

But the road back isn't simple. DeChambeau turned down the Tour's first offer to return earlier this year, an option that came with the same penalties Brooks Koepka accepted. That one-time deal expired in February, and with his LIV contract ending after this season, the clock is ticking. McIlroy's comments add fuel to the fire, suggesting that choosing social media stardom over Tour competition speaks volumes about a player's priorities.

For now, the golf community watches and waits. Will DeChambeau trade in his clubs for a camera, or find a way back to the fairways of the PGA Tour? Either way, the rivalry—and the drama—is far from over.
