Rory McIlroy has never been shy about sharing his thoughts on LIV Golf, and as the Saudi-backed league faces a funding crisis, the conversation around players returning to the PGA Tour is heating up.
LIV Golf has lost its Saudi financial backing and is now scrambling for new investment. This uncertainty has many of its players eyeing a potential return to the PGA Tour. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp recently confirmed that he's been fielding calls from LIV golfers exploring that possibility. At The Masters, Bryson DeChambeau was spotted chatting with tour officials, while Joaquin Niemann has openly expressed his desire to come back.
Among PGA Tour players, opinions are mixed. Cameron Young welcomed Brooks Koepka's return, calling it a boost for the tour, but he doesn't believe players like DeChambeau or Jon Rahm should get the same warm welcome. McIlroy, however, has been the most vocal critic of LIV since its inception. Once the face of the PGA Tour's opposition to the breakaway league, he has softened his tone over time—but his stance remains clear.
Speaking for the first time since news broke of LIV's funding troubles, McIlroy was asked at the Truist Championship whether he'd welcome LIV players back to the PGA Tour. His response was measured but pointed: "I think everyone knows my views on LIV and where it stands in golf. It's never been for me. But that doesn't mean LIV is going away. They'll find alternative investment. However, when one of the wealthiest sovereign wealth funds in the world thinks you're too expensive, that says something."
When pressed on whether he'd open the door for returning players, McIlroy added, "It's a question if they do want to come back. We've seen the quotes over the last few days. It all depends on what happens to LIV. If it's a scenario where players want to return, we'll have to see how that plays out."
For golf fans and apparel enthusiasts alike, this saga adds another layer of intrigue to the sport. Whether you're team McIlroy or hoping for a LIV reunion, one thing's certain: the landscape of professional golf is shifting, and the next move could change everything. Stay tuned—and keep your gear ready for whatever comes next.
