Rory McIlroy has shared some valuable advice for Alex Fitzpatrick as the young Englishman prepares to chase his first individual PGA Tour victory at the Truist Championship this Sunday.

Fitzpatrick heads into the final round at Quail Hollow with a one-shot lead—a remarkable achievement considering he didn't even hold a PGA Tour card just a month ago. The 24-year-old is aiming to follow in McIlroy's footsteps, who famously secured his own breakthrough win at this very course back in 2010.

But the road to victory won't be easy. The Truist Championship is one of the tour's signature events, and Fitzpatrick faces a stacked leaderboard featuring heavyweights like Cameron Young and Tommy Fleetwood. It's a pressure-packed situation for any player, let alone one chasing his first solo win.

After finishing his own final round, McIlroy spoke to Sky Sports about what Fitzpatrick needs to do to get across the line.

"I came from behind, so I probably wasn't feeling the pressure Alex is feeling going out today," McIlroy admitted. "But I think he has to remind himself—it was a team effort a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't just Matt who got them over the line; Alex hit a lot of good shots coming down the stretch."

McIlroy pointed to Fitzpatrick's recent form as a key confidence booster. "He's been playing well and got the win in India. I think he just has to go about his business. It helps that he has people around him on the leaderboard that he knows—like Reitan and Nicolai Hojgaard. That'll help him a little bit."

The four-time major winner added: "It's a massive opportunity for him. We're all rooting for him, and hopefully, he gets it done."

McIlroy's own Sunday was cut short after a tough third round derailed his hopes of winning back-to-back starts. He opened up about what went wrong, drawing parallels to his struggles at Augusta earlier this year.

"I struggled yesterday. I started getting the lefts going—similar to the Saturday at Augusta," McIlroy explained. "I was trying to get a feeling of straightening up the path and matching the path angle. Got a bit of a feel last night and felt better today."

Despite the early exit, McIlroy remains upbeat about where his game is heading—and clearly, he's keeping a close eye on the young talent looking to make his own mark at Quail Hollow.
